Pixbyte VODflex
VODflex is a software based DRM system. It had been developed in order to instantiate Video On Demand without any expenditures of energy and to create the best possible distribution method to the customer.
Therefore, VODflex is not based on theoretical considerations which are not practicable on the mass market. This includes e.g. specific CD/DVD burners or special blanks.
In order to establish VideoOnDemand successfully, it is essential to find an optimal method to protect the video material and simultaneously be able to transport the system quickly and easily to the customer.

VODflex developed and optimized this method. It consists of two modules:

This is a download software which is connected to the DistributeShield system. Special keys are created and saved on the DistributeShield server. Temporary keys are created in the download manager. Then, the already existing, encrypted ISOImage on the VideoOnDemand server will be provided with the customer information and will then be made available for download.
The big advantage is, that it is not necessary to generate an ISO file for every individual customer.

This special module enables writing of the encrypted ISO file on a DVD. The ISO file can only be recorded by means of this module. The module will check the customer key and will generate hereof the master key for decrypting the video content. The burner module additionally verifies, how many times the file is allowed to be recorded and will mark down the counter immediately after a successful recording the video DVD.

VODflex offers a high-quality recompressor for VideoOnDemand providers, which may convert the video DVD into a 4.7 GB format, if necessary. Consequently the content can be formatted in one step into the VideoOnDemand system.
The most interesting question however is: what happens with the video DVD after recording? The answer is left to the provider. He may generate the ISOImage with well known protective mechanisms as RipGuard or ARccOS. The whole purpose however is questionable, as these systems can be cracked by all common DVD copy software products.
CSS is also no alternative, as there are too many existing recording programs, CSS is too old and had latterly even been classified as questionable by courts.
The primary target of VODflex is to protect the digital image and to avoid uncontrolled distribution. This includes among others e.g. the networks Edonkey or Torrent. Furthermore the system is restricting the generation of an end Video DVD.
The basic principle of VODflex is the same as of established audio DRM procedures and can thus be applied on all systems.
